Sounds of Blue

Bob Putignano

Bob Putignano's Radio Free Amsterdam radio hour (edited by John Sinclair) features in approximate order: A "Sparky" set of tunes that picks up where SOB-RFA-10 left off; with a brief segment of Mike Bloomfield guesting with Woody Herman's Big Band herd, followed by a complete rendition of Herman Green's "John De Konk A Roo," from Green's 2001 "Hernando St. Blues." Sparky portions: Ron Levy's "U Rockin' Me" from Levy's 1996 "Zim Zam Zoom" album with Melvin Sparks, more Sparks fly on Red Holloway's "Pass the Gravy" from Red's & Plas Johnson's 2001 "Keep that Groove Going!" Jimmie Vaughan joins Herman Green on the title track of Green's "Hernando St. Blues" from 2001. Sparks reunites with Holloway on Red's "Still Groovin'" from Holloway's 2003 CD "Coast to Coast" this time w/Dr. Lonnie Smith, Frank Wess & Paul Humphrey. Finally: We'll go back to back to back with the Mighty Burner Charles Earland with "Smoke" from Earland's 2002 "If Only for One Night" featuring stunning guitar work from Melvin Sparks, seguing to "Happy 'Cause I'm Goin' Home" written by Chicago's Robert Lamm from Earland's (CTI influenced) "Intensity" from 1972 w/Billy Cobham, Lee Morgan, Hubert Laws, Maynard Parker + others, the Earland trifecta concludes with fiery Sparks on "My Blues is Funky" again from Earland's 2002 "If Only for One Night" an album posthumously released in Earland's name.
