John Scofield 'That's What I Say' John Scofield
"That's What I Say - Plays the Music of Ray Charles
Verve
Goldmine Magazine June 2005

Conceptually, the brainchild of Verve Records exec- Ron Goldstein, elegantly executed to perfection by producer Steve Jordan, with a cast of musicians to die for: Dr. John, Warren Haynes, John Mayer, Aaron Neville, David “Fathead” Newman, and Mavis Staples, plus sidemen: Larry Goldings, Willie Weeks, and Jordan on drums.

As we all know many of these types of “all star” recordings can sound dull, lack spark and creativity, and often do not flow well from track to track- not this one! As except for one performance, every track was recorded live in the same studio with all of the star-power musicians assembled, virtually no overdubs, giving this outstanding disk a solid vibe and groove throughout.

Standout’s include John Mayer singing and trading riffs with Sco on “I Don’t Need No Doctor”, Aaron Neville’s vocals on “You Don’t Know Me”, the instrumental B3 trio jam of “Busted” and the rollicking “What’d I Say” where Mavis, Dr. John, Neville, Haynes, and Mayer all take turns singing a verse.

Without question- Brother Ray moved us all, as will this tribute recording- highly recommended listening, that’s what I say!
